The Virginia Drug Court Association (VDCA) was founded in 2000 by group of visionary drug court judges, prosecutors, treatment providers, probation and law enforcement officers, and other dedicated criminal justice practitioners. This group understood the need for professionals who worked in drug courts throughout Virginia to join forces for education and advocacy on behalf of the courts. They also recognized the need to alter the way that business was being done in the criminal justice arena in adjudicating offenders addicted to alcohol and other drugs.

In five years, we have witnessed the tremendous growth of drug courts and other specialty courts statewide. From just twelve courts in 2000, the number of courts in Virginia has grown to twenty-eight in 2006. The association’s leadership and guidance to the Commonwealth of Virginia has led to the widespread acceptance and institutionalization of the drug court model. In 2003, the Virginia Drug Court Association secured the passage of statewide legislation for drug courts. VDCA provides other important services and resources to the drug court field, including hosting an annual training conference for approximately 200 practitioners. The VDCA also provides advocacy on behalf of drug courts statewide. Our goals for 2007 involve developing a resource CD containing publications and program materials from throughout the state.
